River Murray Flood

In reply to Mr PEDERICK (Hammond) (30 June 2023). (Estimates Committee A)

The Hon. A. KOUTSANTONIS (West Torrens—Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Minister for Energy and Mining):

The Department for Infrastructure and Transport advises over the course of the flood event, and due to flow predictions (and anticipated water levels) increasing over time, the contractor was required to demobilise and remobilise the construction activity zone. The first flooding peak was in December 2022, followed by a second peak in January 2023.

As a result limited works were able to be undertaken in December 2022. In January 2023, the Burdett levee bank (protecting land under the bridge on the eastern side of the river) breached outside of the Project area. This caused flooding of reclaimed land on the eastern side of the river, delaying the commencement of works on and around this side of the bridge (pier painting and installation of cathodic protection).

Works to stabilise the failed sections of the Burdett levee bank were completed in April 2023. Dewatering of the Burdett flood plain beneath the bridge on the eastern side of the river was completed in May 2023. This enabled the contractor to regain access to the work site and undertake critical path works on the eastern side of the river.
