South Eastern Freeway

In reply to the Hon. D.R. CREGAN (Kavel) ((17 June 2022).). (Estimates Committee A)

The Hon. A. KOUTSANTONIS (West Torrens—Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Minister for Energy and Mining):

I am advised that the South Eastern Freeway Managed Motorway Stage 2 Project will include moveable centre barrier gates. These gates will be located at approximately one to two-kilometre intervals, on the first eight kilometres of the Freeway (from the Cross Road, Portrush Road, Glen Osmond Road intersection with the South Eastern Freeway to just east of the Crafers Interchange).

The purpose of these gates is to provide formalised crossover points which allow for temporary, contraflow traffic movements. They will assist in keeping traffic moving in the event of an incident (that requires up-track or down-track lane closures), during road maintenance activities or in response to emergency management.

Planning continues on the development of a concept of operations and concept design for the infrastructure required to implement such a treatment.

As part of this work the Department for Infrastructure and Transport is looking into the application and operation of the types of gates, and supporting infrastructure, used along similar motorway corridors within other jurisdictions. A detailed analysis of congestion and incidents along the freeway is being undertaken, with gates to be located on the basis of incident history and on/off ramp locations to maximise efficiency of the emergency response and congestion management.
