Forensic Science SA

In reply to Mr TEAGUE (Heysen—Deputy Leader of the Opposition) (24 June 2025). (Estimates Committee B)

The Hon. K.J. MAHER (Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, Attorney-General, Minister for Industrial Relations and Public Sector, Special Minister of State): I have been advised of the following:

As at June 2025, the backlog of 'major indictable DNA cases with a suspect' at Forensic Science SA (FSSA) was 489 cases. This number has been stable over the past two months (490 cases in May 2025).

As at June 2025, the backlog of 'illicit drug cases' was 515 cases. This number is trending down (from 539 cases in May 2025 and 557 cases in April 2025).

Additional resources provided to FSSA in the 2024-25 Mid-Year Budget Review and 2025-26 budget, will contribute to a reduction in both of these case backlogs over the coming months.
