ALLOWANCE FOR DOUBTFUL DEBTS

In reply to Mr PISONI (Unley) (22 November 2011) (First Session).

The Hon. G. PORTOLESI (Hartley—Minister for Education and Child Development): The Allowance for Doubtful Debts reported on page 303 of the 2010-11 Auditor-General's Report in regards to the 2009-10 financial year was $14.595 million.

The $13.473 million in the Allowance for Doubtful Debts for the 2010-11 financial year relates to approximately $77,000 for doubtful debts in regards to the Department's corporate activities with the remaining amount relating to debts owed to schools.

Of the amounts considered by schools to be doubtful, the majority of these relate to the doubtful collection of student and other fees and charges.

Amounts written off for the 2010-11 financial year totalled $1.477 million. I note that debts are only written off once the debt is considered irrecoverable.
