          <by role="member" id="3127">The Hon. G. PORTOLESI (Hartley—Minister for Education and Child Development):</by>  The Allowance for Doubtful Debts reported on page 303 of the 2010-11 Auditor-General's Report in regards to the 2009-10 financial year was $14.595 million.</text>

        <text id="20120904dbda8790808b4abb80000653">The $13.473 million in the Allowance for Doubtful Debts for the 2010-11 financial year relates to approximately $77,000 for doubtful debts in regards to the Department's corporate activities with the remaining amount relating to debts owed to schools.</text>
        <text id="20120904dbda8790808b4abb80000654">Of the amounts considered by schools to be doubtful, the majority of these relate to the doubtful collection of student and other fees and charges.</text>
        <text id="20120904dbda8790808b4abb80000655">Amounts written off for the 2010-11 financial year totalled $1.477 million. I note that debts are only written off once the debt is considered irrecoverable.</text>
