RIGHT BITE PROGRAM

In reply to Mr PISONI (Unley) (19 May 2011) (First Session).

The Hon. G. PORTOLESI (Hartley—Minister for Education and Child Development): $1.55 million was committed over 4 years (from 2007) to a range of strategies to support schools and preschools improve children's eating habits and attitudes through the implementation of the healthy eating guidelines. The major part of the initiative was banning all 'junk foods' in government school canteens by the beginning of 2008 (Right Bite). Central office policy development has been completed and schools are implementing the programs.

Funds remain in the budget to allow for review and oversight of the Healthy Eating Guidelines and ensuring that the Right Bite policy is maintained. Support for schools is continuing to be provided by the Department of Education and Child Development.
