CHILD PROTECTION

Mr GARDNER (Morialta) (14:54): I have a supplementary, sir. Is the minister suggesting, therefore, that the legislation being introduced into the house is in response to this being raised by the parent?

The Hon. J.R. RAU (Enfield—Deputy Premier, Attorney-General, Minister for Planning, Minister for Industrial Relations, Minister for Business Services and Consumers) (14:54): I am happy to say the answer to that question from the member for Morialta is that, having received the memorandum and having been made aware of the matters raised by the minister in the remarks she has just made to the parliament, my officers decided that it was important that the legislation—which I understand I will be seeking to introduce very shortly—included provisions which would mean that in the future a circumstance such as this could not occur because there would be mandatory bail conditions; and it is therefore the case that the legislation which will be introduced this afternoon contains amendments to the Bail Act.

It is because, amongst other things, matters such as this matter have been drawn to my attention, and those of my officers, that that legislation contains those measures. I thought it was made reasonably clear in the minister's remarks a little while ago that that is exactly what she had done and that is exactly what had happened.
