SCHOOLS, CRITICAL INCIDENTS REPORTS

In reply to Mr PISONI (Unley) (30 June 2009).

The Hon. J.D. LOMAX-SMITH (Adelaide—Minister for Education, Minister for Mental Health and Substance Abuse, Minister for Tourism, Minister for the City of Adelaide): The Department of Education and Children's Services has provided the following information:

Schools are required to report critical incidents. While the report is required to identify the school, the date of the incident and provide a brief description of the incident, the report does not necessarily identify student characteristics such as non-English speaking background, Aboriginality, special needs or the particular disability of a student.

The number of critical incident reports that have been lodged involving students with special needs or disabilities who enrolled in DECS special schools in the past five years is as follows:

Year Number of Reports
2005 34
2006 31
2007 47
2008 53
2009 16 (as at 1 July 2009)
