MARINE PROTECTED AREAS

215 The Hon. D.G.E. HOOD (25 March 2009). Can the Minister for Environment and Conservation advise, within Marine Park plans currently in development, what percentage of the Parks in total do Sanctuary Zones comprise?

The Hon. G.E. GAGO (Minister for State/Local Government Relations, Minister for the Status of Women, Minister for Consumer Affairs, Minister for Government Enterprises, Minister Assisting the Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Energy):

1. Sanctuary zones in marine parks are established through the management planning process. The Marine Parks Act 2007requires that the outer boundary of a marine park is established and consulted on prior to the commencement of the development of management plans with zoning. Management planning for marine parks will involve extensive consultation with the community, and that consultation process will determine the size and location of sanctuary zones.
