WADE Legislative Council Minister for Health and Wellbeing Drinking Water Quality The Hon. S.G. WADE (Minister for Health and Wellbeing): The Minister for Environment and Water has been advised: 1.	Under the Safe Drinking Water Act 2011, any plans developed by SA Water for monitoring drinking water supplies, including testing of reservoir waters, have to be approved by SA Health. SA Water has advised that the proposed review of existing laboratory services will not reduce monitoring capabilities, including testing of reservoir waters. In addition, in line with government commitments, the opening of reservoirs for recreational access will be undertaken in a manner that protects the safety of drinking water supplies and ensures compliance with the requirements of the Safe Drinking Water Act 2011. To support these commitments, SA Health is leading a public health risk assessment in conjunction with SA Water and the Department for Environment and Water to identify which recreational activities can be introduced with low risk to drinking water safety. 2.	SA Water has advised SA Health about a proposed restructure of its operations in a business unit. This restructure is currently the subject of consultation. I am advised that this proposed restructure relates to the loss of an interstate water testing contract. I am advised that any staff changes that may occur through this restructure will not compromise existing water quality testing or public health, ensuring that the skills and expertise required to meet public health responsibilities are maintained. Any suggestion of water quality being jeopardised as a result of these proposed changes is incorrect and misinformed.
