HUNTER (Minister for Communities and Social Inclusion, Minister for Social Housing, Minister for Disabilities, Minister for Youth, Minister for Volunteers): The Minister for Education and Child Development has been advised: South Australian public schools continue to have the highest percentage of male teachers in the school sector compared to all States and Territories in Australia. Teach SA, a State Government funded program to increase the number of qualified maths and science teachers in public schools, has been successful in attracting more male teachers to public schools. Approximately 58 per cent of the teachers recruited so far through this program have been male. Other Department for Education and Child Development initiatives that have also been implemented to support the attraction of quality teachers to the workforce, including male teachers, are the Teaching is Inspiring campaign and the SA Public Teaching Awards. The current number of teacher graduates entering the teaching workforce is sufficient to retain a strong supply in South Australia. The number of males entering teacher education courses in South Australian universities has increased from 1,127 in 2006 to 1,285 in 2010.
