SANDRA KANCK (16:44): The Democrats support this important initiative as a small but significant step in creating a smoke-free Adelaide. Creating smoke-free clean air zones is an effective public health measure and we support their implementation whenever and wherever possible. In the absence of stricter statewide controls, which we have tried to get on a number of occasions, I applaud this move by the Hon. David Ridgway. I look forward to the enthusiastic cooperation of other members of this chamber and the Adelaide City Council in promoting a smoke-free city for World No Tobacco Day 2008. In a similar vein to the welcome signs in Norway, which say 'Welcome to Norway. The only thing we smoke here is fish', I look forward to the day when visitors to Adelaide are welcomed with a sign that says, 'Welcome to Adelaide. The only thing we smoke here is almonds.'
