(Estimates Committee B) The Hon. S.C. MULLIGHAN House of Assembly Lee Treasurer Medical Malpractice Claims The Hon. S.C. MULLIGHAN (Lee—Treasurer): I have been advised: 1.	$31.3 million was paid in medical malpractice claims during 2021-22. $34.7 million was paid in 2020-21 and $40.5 million paid in 2019-20. It is not possible to project how much will be paid in medical malpractice claims in 2022-23, as claims develop over many years following an incident and the timing of settlements is based on individual circumstances, including factors which are outside SAFA's direct control. 2.	As indicated above, it is not possible to provide a projection for 2022-23. 3.	During 2021-22, four medical malpractice claims were settled. 	During 2020-21, eight claims were settled and in 2019-20 nine claims were settled. At 1 July 2022, SAFA was managing a total of 60 medical malpractice claims. 4.	It is not possible to provide specific detail on the major claims, due to the information being subject to legal professional privilege.
