The Bolivar wastewater treatment plant receives and treats approximately 70 per cent of Adelaide's wastewater. The primary grit, pre-aeration and sedimentation concrete tanks provide the primary treatment for the incoming sewerage flows to the plant. These tanks were built in the 1960s, and the committee has been informed that they are now showing signs of significant corrosion. This has begun to affect the structural elements of the tanks. As part of the upgrade, two new grit vortex units will be installed. This will make grit removal more efficient, and consume considerably less energy than the current process. This will provide a reduction in long-term cost savings of the process. The total cost of the works is estimated to be $34.904 million (GST inclusive), which includes $4.204 million continuously. Given this, and pursuant to section 12C of the Parliamentary Committees Act 1991, the Public Works Committee reports to parliament that it recommends the proposed public works.
