J.D. HILL (Kaurna—Minister for Health, Minister for Mental Health and Substance Abuse, Minister for the Southern Suburbs, Minister Assisting the Premier in the Arts): I am advised: A Medicare eligible person who is receiving public hospital services for an injury and who is entitled to receive or has received a compensation payment in respect of an injury, is considered a compensable patient under the National Healthcare Agreement. Motor accident patients are compensable patients. The National Healthcare Agreement states that compensable patients may be charged an amount for public hospital services as determined by the State and Territory. Fees charged to compensable patients by public hospitals in South Australia are set via Notice in the SA Government Gazette under section 44 of the Health Care Act 2008. These fees were updated in the SA Government Gazette of 10 June 2010. Fees charged to compensable patients reflect full cost recovery and vary depending on the treatment type of service, length of stay and location.
