<by role="member" id="535">The Hon. J.D. HILL (Kaurna—Minister for Health, Minister for the Southern Suburbs, Minister Assisting the Premier in the Arts):</by> The Minister for Transport has provided the following information:</text>
<text id="20091117e60c98ac1dbe430bb0000483">Flood inundation mapping of the Onkaparinga River in the area was produced for the E&WS Department in December 1993. This mapping shows that water flows over Saltfleet Street south of the bridge with a frequency of between once in 10 and once in 20 years on average, taking into account flooding from both the river and from high tides. Levees north of the Saltfleet Street Bridge protect the road from flooding to a much higher standard.</text>
<text id="20091117e60c98ac1dbe430bb0000484">To provide a higher standard of protection for the road, a causeway across the floodplain to the south of the bridge would need to be constructed. A number of culverts would also be required to provide for flows that would otherwise be blocked. As the floodplain and channels in the area are of high environmental significance, the benefit of the construction of a causeway would have to be balanced against the environmental impact caused.</text>
<text id="20091117e60c98ac1dbe430bb0000485">Currently any flooding is managed through a process for the closure of the road and the provision of detours until any flooding has subsided.</text>
